200 rescued as three-storey building collapses in Anambra

News reaching us from Wiz9jablog reveals that a sudden incident occurred in Anambra State involving the collapse of a building. This incident took place at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka. Quick actions were taken by the Operatives from the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), who were able to rescue 200 people, including students, from the collapsed building.

According to the information gathered, the Operatives acted swiftly to rescue everyone inside the three-storey building, which had already started losing its structural integrity before the collapse.

One of the Agency’s Deputy Commandants, currently in charge of Rapid Response, Henry Uchechukwu Nabolisa, explained the cause of the collapse. He mentioned, “The major cause of the collapse is the presence of soakaways spread across the four walls of the building. The structure has about 10 soakaways surrounding it.”

He further stated, “We have also sent signals to other residents in the state and surrounding communities to quickly reach out to authorities if they notice any signs of a building collapsing. This can prompt immediate intervention. No lives were lost, and nobody was injured.”

Officials from the ACTDA, the State Ministry of Environment, and the rescue team were at the scene of the collapse at the time of filing this report.

Other buildings in the area, including a two-storey building called Golden Lodge, were sealed off after cracks were observed to prevent a similar occurrence.
