Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on Raising Sons with Gender Equality Values
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, one of the celebrated Nigerian author, on her social media account, voiced her dedication to instilling values of gender equality and respect for women in her sons. In a recent interview with BBC’s Emma Barnett, which was shared on YouTube this Wednesday, Adichie discussed the pervasive issue of toxic masculinity and emphasized the crucial responsibility parents hold in molding future generations.
“I am resolved to raise good men. I am constantly thinking about how to ensure they never feel a sense of entitlement over women’s bodies,” she remarked.

The acclaimed author underscored the importance of providing boys with positive male role models. She noted that while young girls today have inspiring female figures to look up to, boys often lack comparable examples.
“Generally, young girls now have women in public life whom they can admire. But I don’t believe boys have the same advantage. That space is often filled with harmful influences and ideologies. I wish more good men would step forward,” she added.
Adichie, widely recognized for her feminist works such as We Should All Be Feminists, emphasized the need for masculinity to adapt in ways that align with principles of equality.

“Culture is not something that defines us; we define culture. We have the power to redefine masculinity in a way that embraces equality. It is entirely possible,” she asserted.
Beyond her thoughts on masculinity, Adichie also shared how motherhood has influenced her writing. She confessed that becoming a mother once led to a creative hurdle.
“I avoid using the term ‘writer’s block’ because I’m superstitious, but it did happen when I became pregnant. Something shifted, and I believe it was more than just a physical change,” she revealed.
