Court Halts Senator Natasha Recall Process

The court issued an interim injunction following an ex parte application supported by an affidavit highlighting extreme urgency, along with other court documents submitted by Anebe Jacob Ogirima. He acted on behalf of himself and four other plaintiffs, all registered voters and constituents of the Kogi Central Senatorial District. The application, presented by Smart Nwachimere, Esq., of West-Idahosa, SAN & Co., was approved on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

In granting the request, the presiding judge stated:

“Based on the Motion Ex-parte dated March 19, 2025, and filed on March 20, 2025, in the Registry of this Honourable Court, the Court hereby grants the following reliefs:

An interim injunction is issued to restrain the Defendant (INEC), its staff, agents, privies, or assigns from receiving, accepting, or acting on any petition containing fictitious signatures or names allegedly from members of the Kogi Central Senatorial District.

Additionally, INEC is barred from conducting any referendum based on such a petition aimed at initiating the recall process of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, pending the resolution of the Motion on Notice.”

The court further directed that the interim injunction remains in effect, with a return date set for May 6, 2025, for a service report and further mention.

This decision came two days after certain constituents, allegedly backed by some of Senator Natasha’s political rivals, began gathering signatures to initiate her recall. Viral videos showed large numbers of constituents signing the petition. This development follows recent allegations made by Senator Natasha against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of sexual harassment.
