New YouTube Policy Targets AI Misuse in Video Creation

Google is now taking action against individuals using AI to generate videos on YouTube. This decision follows the misuse of music by artists to create AI-generated videos, thus protecting the rights of the original owners.

Google, the owner of YouTube, announced the update via their policy published on Tuesday. Their objective is to address issues raised by the community, including creators, viewers, and artists, about the significant impact of the AI age, particularly where content is generated using AI and involves cloning one’s image without their approval.

YouTube clarified that takedowns won’t be automatic; copyright owners can request takedowns. The new policy is set to take effect next month.

In the YouTube policy update, it states:

“So in the coming months, we’ll make it possible to request the removal of AI-generated or other synthetic or altered content that simulates an identifiable individual, including their face or voice, using our privacy request process.”

YouTube made it clear that not all AI-generated content will be removed automatically, but essential details will be required for takedowns, such as identifying satire, unique IDs, and more.

They also stated:

“We’ll consider factors such as whether content is the subject of news reporting, analysis, or critique of the synthetic vocals.”

According to YouTube, labels or distributors representing artists participating in YouTube’s early AI music experiments can file takedown requests. This option will expand to additional labels and distributors in the coming months.

In conclusion, content creators should avoid using AI tools with copyrighted material without the owner’s consent and focus on creating original content.
